How does HotBot rank sites?

HotBot's search results are based solely on comparing the user's search query to the content of millions of Web pages. We have no list that matches certain search terms or keywords with special results.

Basic factors affecting a page's ranking include the words in the title, keyword meta tags, word frequency in the document, and document length.

We're aware that some people create pages to maliciously "spoof" search engines. Spoofing a search engine makes search engines return pages that are irrelevant to the search, or pages that rank higher than their content warrants. Common spoofing techniques include the repetition of words, the inserting of meta tags unrelated to the document's content, or the use of words that cannot be read due to their small size or color. If HotBot detects search-engine spoofing, it will significantly downgrade a page's ranking.

Understanding HotBot Search Results

Related Searches offer searches that are similar to your original query to help narrow your results. Related Searches automatically list either more specific or more general search choices, depending on your search query. If you click on one of the Related Searches, you will see a completely new Top 10 list along with the general search results.

Search Within These Results
In the HotBot Search box on the results page, you will see a checkbox labeled Search Within These Results. Clicking on this unique feature enables you to conduct another search within the results of your previous query. Search Within These Results automatically sorts through the Web results of your first search and allows you to tailor your initial results pool to find sites more relevant to your query. For example, if you run a search for "cars," a wide variety of search results will be generated. Click on Search Within These Results and enter a more specific car search, such as "bmw." From your total search results of "cars," HotBot will automatically sort through these sites and return only "bmw"-related results from "cars." (Note: All of the queries you run are saved in the Search box in the order in which you input them. So don't be concerned when all you see in the box is your first query string. The others are in there.)

Directory Results
Directory Results offer you even more search options from the HotBot Directory. Depending on your search, you will see a list of Directory matches that can help you search even further on HotBot. Our HotBot Directory is the largest human-edited directory, organized from general to very specific categories. The Directory is like a "users choice" of Web sites with site recommendations provided by category editors.

Revise Search
The results page feature, Revise Search, allows you to modify your initial query. For example, if you enter a query with the search settings set to 25 Results, and you want to change your results setting to 100 Results, click on Revise Search. You'll see that your initial settings still appear. Simply revise them and submit a new search.

New Search
New Search allows you to quickly start a completely new search after initiating a query. If you find that your search is not producing the results you had hoped, click on New Search. You will be taken back to the HotBot Frontdoor for a fresh start.

Advanced Search
Advanced Search allows you to take your search directly to the HotBot Advanced Search page, where you can use the Advanced Search settings to specify and narrow your search. After you click on the Advanced Search button, your initial search settings will be incorporated automatically into the Advanced Search page. Advanced searching allows for high-level customization for the most relevant of search results.

Web Results
The HotBot Web Results you receive when you conduct a search are made up of three categories of listings: Top 10 site results; the HotBot Directory results, which have been reviewed by directory editors; as well as a listing of general Web search results (delivered by Ask Jeeves). If you enter a popular query, your search will likely generate a Top 10 list of the most popular sites in that category, followed by the edited Directory results, and then the general Web results. On the second page of your results (items 11-20), you can see the total number of results that your search produced.

Top 10 Results
Top 10 results are determined by monitoring a number of factors, such as the frequency with which sites are chosen by users in search results, and the overall positioning of sites relative to one another.

Main Results
If your search generates a Top 10 list, you won't see the main (general) search results until you go to the second page (items 11-20) of the results listing. Our search results are based on comparing the user's search query to the content of millions of Web pages. There is no list matching certain search terms or keywords with special results. Basic factors affecting a page's ranking are the words in the title, keyword meta tags, word frequency in the document, and document length.

How can I personalize the HotBot homepage?

To personalize filter settings on HotBot's homepage, click the 'Personalize These Settings' button. On the personalization page, choose which search filters you'd like to see on the HotBot homepage by checking the box located to the left of each search filter. You can also change the default values of each filter.

Keep in mind that filters are very powerful, and can greatly limit the scope of your search. You're likely to get better results if you don't use too many filters, especially for general searches.

How does HotBot rank URLs in the search results?

The rank represents HotBot's confidence in the match. A high rank is given to the pages that most likely contain the data you are looking for. A low ranking page contains the search terms, but HotBot has determined that it does probably not include the information you need.

Each document which matches the requirements of a search is assigned a rank. HotBot considers a number of factors when ranking.

Some of the most basic factors affecting query result ranking include:

Word frequency in document
In general, the more often a query word occurs in the document, the higher the rank. However, the obscurity of the word also has impact. Common words like "the" contribute less to the rank than rare and discriminating words like "tiki".

Search words in title
Pages that use your search terms in the title will be ranked significantly higher than documents that contain the search term in the text only.

Search words in keywords
Pages that use your search terms in the "keywords" tag, will be weighted more highly than text words, but less highly than title words.

Document length
When the search words appear frequently in a short document, the page will be ranked higher than when the words appear in a long document.

How do I search using query modifiers?

Query modifiers can be used to further refine "all the words" and "any of the words" search settings as well as Boolean searches. When entering search terms into the main or Modify text boxes, you can use quotation marks around phrases ("search engines") and plus and minus signs before words and phrases (+sports -"ice hockey").

Name / Symbol / Description

quotation marks
" "

Quotation marks are used to denote exact phrases. For example, a search on "New York Times" will match only documents containing the words as an exact phrase. It will not find pages with the words used in a different order, such as "New times in York!" plus operator + The plus operator placed before a word or phrase requires that all returned pages contain that search term. For example, JFK +CIA will return only pages mentioning the CIA, but pages that also mention JFK will be ranked higher in the results.

minus operator
-

The minus operator placed before a word or phrase excludes all documents containing that search term. For example, searching for "Three Musketeers" -candy will help you find Web pages about the book and the movies without getting articles about the candy bar.

How do I see more than 1000 results?

HotBot imposes the 1,000 results limit for these reasons:
  • If you are looking beyond 1,000 results, you need to refine your search.
  • HotBot will return only up to 1,000 results for a large search query. We strive to provide the most extensive search results possible, but displaying more than 1,000 results can slow down your overall search for relevant hits. HotBot encourages users to refine their searches within 1,000 results for more effective searches.
Note: This limitation is inflexible.

Why do I receive a "403 - You are not authorized to view this page" error?

HotBot's top priority is to provide the best performance and highest quality of service on the internet. Unfortunately, the internet is full of malicious users that intentionally attempt to degrade the experience of all other users. To ensure superior and consistent performance for our online users, we deny service in response to these malicious requests.

If you have received the "Error 403" page in response to your request, you may be using software that provides an option for preventing the name of your browser from being sent to our servers. We require this name, known as the "user-agent string", in order to effectively service your web browser request.

Examples of software that provides this feature are Norton's Internet Security and Zone Labs' ZoneAlarm Pro. These products provide our users with beneficial security features to protect them from the same sort of malicious behavior that HotBot is subject to. We do not require our users to disable these products in order to use our site, but we do require that all requests transmit User-agent information. If you are using either of these software packages or something similar, please review your documentation to be sure that you are not explicitly preventing the name of your browser (User-agent) from being sent with your request.

Specific Tools:

Norton Internet Security 2002 To ensure you are not preventing your User-agent information from being sent to our servers follow these steps:

    1. Launch Internet Security.
    2. Select Privacy Control.
    3. Select the Options button at the top of the window.
    4. In the window that appears, select Advanced Options.
    5. Choose the Privacy tab.
    6. Under the Browser Privacy section, be sure that the Browser (User-agent) is set to Permit or Reply. If you choose Reply be certain to include a message in the adjacent box. The default message "Blocked by Norton" should work fine.

NOTE: Other versions of Internet Security and other similar software may follow different steps.

Why doesn't my site get indexed?

There are three main reasons submissions fail:
  • The Host server is non-operational during spidering.
  • The URL is submitted without the "http://" prefix.
  • The host server contains the robots.txt exclusion tag.
Other reasons submissions may fail:
  • Pages containing frames require special formatting. See this URL for information on how to structure your tags.
  • Pages requiring a cookie will not be indexed.
  • Inktomi must be able to resolve the DNS name. If there is a problem resolving the DNS name, use an IP address.
  • The URL contains special characters such as: ?, =, %, &.
  • HotBot accepts 50 pages per domain per day from the Submit a Web Site page. As a result, submissions from large domains with user homepages often experience problems becoming indexed. HotBot ignores submissions over (the limit of) 50.

How do I prevent HotBot from indexing my site?

A robots.txt file removes pages from HotBot. You can place this file on your site to tell search robots which directories they should add to their databases and which they shouldn't index.

If you prefer that HotBot not index your site, ask your webmaster to create a robots.txt file for your site. HotBot's crawler will fetch and obey this command file. It will obey any entry with a user agent of "*" or containing the word "Slurp" (the name of HotBot's crawler).

You can find the robots.txt file standard here.

HotBot also honors the robots "noindex" meta tag, which keeps HTML files out of HotBot's database index. This can be added to the head section of an HTML document, as illustrated below.
You can also remove the offending page from your Web server or restrict public access to your server (talk to your system administrator or Web site hoster). Your page listing will remain on HotBot until the next time our Web crawler visits your site, which can take up to 60 days.

For the security of people submitting pages to HotBot, we do not manually remove pages from our index. So, if you find information on a page that concerns you in some way (e.g., your personal information is displayed or you find instances of trademark infringement), write to the webmaster of that particular site.

For more information, see Webmonkey Tutorials.

How does HotBot know when I remove my site?

HotBot automatically removes the old URL during the regular 60-day crawling schedule. When HotBot revisits your domain and sees that the information for your old Web page no longer exists, or has a robots.txt file, it removes the information from the database. To secure the URLs already in the database, we do not manually remove URLs.
