   General Questions

How can I protect my images from being stolen?

The reality is, if you put something on the internet, anyone with a little know how can take it off regardless of what code you add to your page or what right-click disable script you have.  If someone wants to, they can find a way around it.

If you absolutely do not want someone to steal your images, do not put them online, and do not email them.

However, if you still want to deter someone with limited knowledge from stealing your images, you can use a Javascript No Right click script. There are many examples online.  Please feel free to search one out, and use whatever is best suited to your needs.

Can I control the ads that appear on my site?

Angelfire no longer gives members the options to choose between pop-up ads, and inline banner ads.

The advertising placed on your website will be automatically targeted based on the content of your site.

If your site contains information about pets, ads about pets will be displayed.

If your site contains information about cars, ads about cars will be displayed.

At this time, the only way to change what type of ads appear on your site, would be to change the content of your site. Adding new text will help re-target the ads on the site.

Can I use Google AdSense or Yahoo Publisher ads?

There's no short answer to this question.

For free users: you cannot use either Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher Ads on your site.
We have an exclusive deal with Google that disallows our free members publishing AdSense ads to their account's pages.
Part of the Terms of Service with both Google, and Yahoo, states that no page that serves contextual advertising (AdSense, and Publisher ads) can contain contextual advertising from any other company. Ie; since Google Ads are on your free Angelfire page, you cannot serve any other ads.

For Premium users: You are allowed to put either Google Adsense, or Yahoo Publisher ads on your site. However, we do not guarantee that you will be approved by either service, and cannot help you get approved to either program.

Please keep in mind that both Google AdSense, and Yahoo Publisher have their own policies on what they allow for content, what sites they approve, and who they allow to use their services. Angelfire/Lycos does not guarantee that any site we host will be approved for either or both of these services.
Our official stance is that we do not disallow the use of either Google AdSense, or Yahoo Publisher ads on Premium Services.

Converting from Basic to Advanced Editors

Converting from the Basic Editor, to the Advanced editor is only recommened if you know your way around HTML.

If you're unfamiliar with HTML coding, this might not be the best idea for you to do.

Once you've converted to the Advanced Editor, there is no way to convert your page back to Basic.

If you "accidentally" convert to Advanced, the only way to go back, is to delete your page, and create it again from scratch.

Angelfire does not back up your files, and will not be able to restore anything for you, should this happen.

Does Angelfire allow MP3s?

The only MP3/Audio files that are allowed on Angelfire Websites are those that are created by and/or belong to you. There are some restrictions that you should be aware of:

MP3's/Audio Files are blocked by our interstitial page. They cannot be used remotely nor can they be embedded into a page to be used as a background sound. They must be downloaded directly from your page.

If we receive notice that a member is using illegal MP3's/Audio Files (copyrighted material that the member does not own) we will take the site down. The member will not receive notice that we are doing this nor will we give the files back. There is a chance to appeal, where we identify actual ownership of the files, and will restore the site if the member has ownership of the files and the mp3's/audio files on the site are legal.

How do I link pages together?

To link pages together, you'd want to use some basic HTML.

To link a page, you'd need to use the following code:

<a href="pagename.html">Link Text</a>

The code works as follows:

  • <a href tells the code what it is that you're doing. You're hyper-referencing another page.
  • ="pagename.html"> tells the HREF tag what page you want to go to, when clicked.
  • Link Text tells the link what to put on the HTML page, as the clickable link.
  • </a> closes the tag.

To customize this to work with your pages, replace the "pagename.html" with the actual page you want to link to, and change the "link text" to whatever it is that you want your link to say on the page.

How do I make new pages?

To add a new page to your site, you'd want to make sure you're logged into Angelfire, and are on your WebShell page (http://www.angelfire.lycos.com/cgi-auth/webshell).

Below the WebShell box, you'll see a "Create" section, which has a few options: New file and New Subdirectory. As well as a text box below those radio buttons.

Selection the round button for "New File", and enter the name of the file you want to create in the text box labeled File/Subdirectory Name.

Be sure to include the .html on the end, or it may not work properly. Once you put your name in, click the "Create" button.

Remember, filenames need to be HTML compliant. That means no spaces, no odd characters other than underscores (Ie; !@#$%^&*()?:,.'{}[]).

Putting things in your filename that aren't HTML compliant will result in some people not being able to load your file.

How do I use the basic editor?

Angelfire provides a "basic" editor, for newer web builders, who aren't comfortable writing their own HTML code.

Be default, the basic editor will be enabled on all of your new pages. This will allow you to easily input text, and images where you'd like them to show up on your page.

Please note, the basic editor that we provide is extremely limited, in what it will allow you to do, and customize about your site. If you're dissatisfied with the basic editor, we suggest that you learn some HTML coding, and switch to the Advanced Editor. The advanced editor will allow you to completely customize your site to any design you'd like.

What does the file upload button do?

Use this area of the Web Shell to upload files to your Angelfire directory. File Upload lets you take existing files from your computer's hard drive or a floppy disk and put them in your Angelfire directory.

For instance, if you have an image or some HTML you've written that you want to put on your Angelfire Web page, you'll want to put it in your Angelfire directory. File Upload makes it easy -- upload one file at a time directly on the Web Shell, or click Upload multiple files and enter up to ten files to upload simultaneously.

Click Browse to find the file on your local disk, or type in the full pathname of the file to upload.

What is a transloader?

The Transloader is a nifty little tool that lets you copy content from anywhere else in the Web directly into your Angelfire member directory. Use the Transloader to quickly assemble files, images, or MP3s from anywhere on the Web for use on your Angelfire site.

To load a file from somewhere else on the Web using the Transloader, you select the file by typing the file's URL into the "File URL" input box. Then click the "Move it!" button. The file will be saved in your Angelfire directory using the file name listed in the URL. For example, if you chose to save a file located at http://images.sonique.com/banners/mini-scroll1.gif, the file would be saved into your member directory as "mini-scroll1.gif". You can change the name of the file when it's saved by specifying your own filename in the "File name" field. You could save "mini-scroll1.gif" as "sonique.gif" in your directory by typing the new name into the "File Name" field before clicking the "Move It!" button. You will need to check the "Overwrite" box if you want to overwrite a file that has the same filename as the one you are transloading.

Helpful Hints:

You can upload more than one file at a time with the Transloader. Just click on the "Upload multiple files" link underneath the tool's "Upload" button.
Be sure to get permission before using any copyrighted images! There are also many image libraries available on the Web that can be used freely without permission.
The Transloader tool is the only way for WebTV users to copy files to their Angelfire directory. Since most WebTVs don't have hard drives, WebTV users can't copy files with File Upload or ftp://ftp.

What is bandwidth?

Dictionary.com defines bandwidth as "The amount of data that can be passed along a communications channel in a given period of time."

What does this mean for your webpage?

In any given amount of time (hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly), your webpage can only transfer so much information across the web, to viewers of your site.

For example, if your webpage is 2MB in total. 100 people viewing your webpage in a day, would be 200MB of bandwidth.

1000 people viewing that same page, would be 2GB of bandwidth.

Bandwidth, with Angelfire, is based on a 30 day rolling window. This means that on any given day, you're seeing the previous 30 days worth of bandwidth in your account. The bandwidth count will not reset to 0 at any time, regardless of when the "month" starts.

If your account goes over your bandwidth (1GB for free memberships), your site will be shut down temporarily, until the following day, when your bandwidth should reset again.

What is remote loading/hot linking?

Remote loading/Hot linking is the act of storing files within your account with us, and using them on other sites (MySpace, LiveJournal, eBay, etc).

This is against our rules.

If you attempt to do this with your account, you will see a "roadblock" image, instead of your actual image. This will simply state that the image you're trying to display is hosted on Angelfire/Tripod, and will not display.

If you'd like to use your images on other sites as mentioned above, you'd need to upgrade to one of our Premium Subscriptions.

What's the difference between Basic and Advanced Editors?

The Basic Editor and the Advanced Editor both edit HTML code. While it is limited, the Basic Editor is menu-driven and easy to use. The Advanced Editor is a plain text editor, which means you must have some understanding of HTML in order to use it. You may keep some pages in the Basic Editor format and others in the Advanced Editor format. You may convert a page from the Basic Editor to the Advanced Editor but be warned -- you cannot convert it back.

No HTML knowledge is required to use the Basic Editor, which offers convenient tables and fields for you to customize with your own content. If you create a new file in the Web Shell, select it and click Edit, you will get the Basic Editor. If you select a file from the files list and click Edit, the system automatically selects the correct editor to use for the format of the selected file. Always use the Edit button to edit existing files.

The Advanced Editor is a simple editor for advanced users who want to write in straight HTML. It contains one big text area box in which you write HTML code. If you want to create a new file using the Advanced Editor, simply create a new page in the Web Shell, select it and click Edit. In the Basic Editor, there is a Convert button -- this will convert your Basic page to straight HTML, and you will be able to edit it using the Advanced Editor. Back in the Web Shell, you may have some files that you created with the Basic Editor, and others that you either converted or created with the Advanced Editor. When you open a file, the system automatically detects the file format and:

If Basic, launch the Basic Editor.

If Advanced, launch the Advanced Editor.

Why don't my edits show after I save my page?

Once you've saved your page after editing, you may have to press Reload (for Netscape) or Refresh (for Explorer) on your browser to make sure your browser loads the new edited copy from our server, rather than from your browser's cache. Netscape has a feature called "Super-Reload" (use Shift+Reload) which guarantees that a fresh copy of the page is loaded from our server. But we recommend the following permanent solutions:

Netscape users:
Go to Options - Network Preferences - Cache and set Verify Document to Always.

Windows Microsoft Explorer users:
Go to View - select Options, then Advanced
In the Temporary Internet Files section - select settings
In the Check for newer version of stored pages section - select Every visit to the page
Click OK

Macintosh Microsoft Explorer users:
(menu) Edit - Preferences, (left scroll area) Web Browser - Advanced, (main area) Cache - Update Pages: -- which should be changed to Always.

Will I have to rebuild my site, if I upgrade?

No. If you upgrade your site none of your HTML files will change.

Everything will stay exactly as it is now, with the exception of your "My Account" page(s). This area will now reflect your Premium subscription, as well as all the added things you get with that subscription. A domain name (in most cases), domain email (in most cases), better traffic stats, etc.
