How can I protect my images from being stolen?

The reality is, if you put something on the internet, anyone with a little know how can take it off regardless of what code you add to your page or what right-click disable script you have.  If someone wants to, they can find a way around it.

If you absolutely do not want someone to steal your images, do not put them online, and do not email them.

However, if you still want to deter someone with limited knowledge from stealing your images, you can use a Javascript No Right click script. There are many examples online.  Please feel free to search one out, and use whatever is best suited to your needs.

Yes, definitely. If you're comfortable with writing HTML, you can use the FreeForm editor, to create your site and pages.

What is bandwidth?

Dictionary.com defines bandwidth as "The amount of data that can be passed along a communications channel in a given period of time."

What does this mean for your webpage?

In any given amount of time (hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly), your webpage can only transfer so much information across the web, to viewers of your site.

For example, if your webpage is 2MB in total. 100 people viewing your webpage in a day, would be 200MB of bandwidth.

1000 people viewing that same page, would be 2GB of bandwidth.

Bandwidth, with Tripod, is based on a 30 day rolling window. This means that on any given day, you're seeing the previous 30 days worth of bandwidth in your account. The bandwidth count will not reset to 0 at any time, regardless of when the "month" starts.

If your account goes over your bandwidth (1GB for free memberships), your site will be shut down temporarily, until the following day, when your bandwidth should reset again.

This area will now reflect your Premium subscription, as well as all the added things you get with that subscription.

A domain name (in most cases), domain email (in most cases), better traffic stats, etc.

Why do I need an index.html file?

Your index.html file, works as your "home" page.

When someone types in your URL (web address), the first page they're going to see, is the index.html page.

There may be some technical reason why the word "index" was chosen, way back when the internet started, but that's a story for another day.

With any hosting company, you need to have some type of "index" page, whether it be HTML, or another scripting language.

It's important to have this, to make your site function properly.

Does Tripod allow MP3s?

The only MP3 files that are allowed on Tripod Websites are those that are created by and/or belong to you. There are some restrictions that you should be aware of:

MP3's are blocked by our interstitial page. They cannot be used remotely nor can they be embedded into a page to be used as a background sound. They must be downloaded directly from your page.

If we receive notice that a member is using illegal MP3's (copyrighted material that the member does not own) we will take the site down. The member will not receive notice that we are doing this nor will we give the files back. There is a chance to appeal, where we identify actual ownership of the files, and will restore the site if the member has ownership of the files and the mp3's on the site are legal.

Do I have to use your building templates?

No, you aren't limited to our templates.

The templates are simply provided for our newer users, who aren't comfortable editing their own HTML.

If you're a HTML expert, or even someone who's just comfortable editing raw HTML code, you'd want to use the "Free Form Editor", which will allow you to edit the HTML code for your site/pages.

This will also allow you to use any type of design you want, including your own.

Can Tripod Customer Service help me learn HTML?

Unfortunately, no. With the vast amount of resources available on the internet today, Tripod Customer Service is not able to provide any information, tips, or support on how to build a site.

We can, however, suggest multiple websites that are great for beginners to learn how to work online, and with HTML:

http://www.lissaexplains.com
http://www.dynamicdrive.com
http://www.hotscripts.com

If you also do an internet search for "beginner's guide to HTML", numerous sites will come up, to help you learn HTML coding, and some basics of WebDesign.

What is remote loading/hot linking?

Remote loading/Hot linking is the act of storing files within your account with us, and using them on other sites (MySpace, LiveJournal, eBay, etc).

This is against our rules.

If you attempt to do this with your account, you will see a "roadblock" image, instead of your actual image.

This will simply state that the image you're trying to display is hosted on Angelfire/Tripod, and will not display.

If you'd like to use your images on other sites as mentioned above, you'd need to upgrade to one of our Premium Subscriptions.

Can I change the ads on my site?

Tripod no longer gives members the options to choose between pop-up ads, and inline banner ads.

The advertising placed on your website will be automatically targeted based on the content of your site.

If your site contains information about pets, ads about pets will be displayed.

If your site contains information about cars, ads about cars will be displayed.

At this time, the only way to change what type of ads appear on your site, would be to change the content of your site.

Adding new text will help re-target the ads on the site.

Can I use Google AdSense or Yahoo Publisher ads?

There's no short answer to this question.

For free users: you cannot use either Google Adsense or Yahoo Publisher Ads on your site.
We have an exclusive deal with Google that disallows our free members publishing AdSense ads to their account's pages.
Part of the Terms of Service with both Google, and Yahoo, states that no page that serves contextual advertising (AdSense, and Publisher ads) can contain contextual advertising from any other company. Ie; since Google Ads are on your free Tripod page, you cannot serve any other ads.

For Premium users: You are allowed to put either Google Adsense, or Yahoo Publisher ads on your site. However, we do not guarantee that you will be approved by either service, and cannot help you get approved to either program.

Please keep in mind that both Google AdSense, and Yahoo Publisher have their own policies on what they allow for content, what sites they approve, and who they allow to use their services. Tripod/Lycos does not guarantee that any site we host will be approved for either or both of these services.

Our official stance is that we do not disallow the use of either Google AdSense, or Yahoo Publisher ads on Premium Services.

How can I password protect my site?

It's now easier than ever to create and maintain private homepages on Tripod with our Homepage Studio version 2.0.

Version 2.0 combines our powerful Private Pods tools with our homepage building and file management utilities to give you the ability to easily create a homepage and then make it private. By making it private you can restrict access to only the people you choose. If you already have a private pod (a private homepage) on Tripod you can now edit the page and make changes to your access lists from the Homepage Studio's File Manager.

How does this work? It's easy. The only address you need to remember (or bookmark) is the "build" page:

http://www.tripod.lycos.com/build/

To create a new private homepage choose from the easy step-by-step Quickpage builder or the advanced Freeform builder. Once you've finished building you'll arrive at a confirmation page where you can choose to make the page private or keep it public. If you select the private option, step-by-step (see below) instructions for privatizing your page with our new File Manager will be provided.

Maintaining your existing private web pages, including adding members to, or removing members from, your access list; creating new access lists; and inviting new guests to your private pages can now through the Community Tools of the Homepage Studio File Manager.

To make a page private, go back to the Filemanager and do the following:

1. If you haven't already put this page into a directory, you will need to do so (only directories can be made private; not individual pages). To put this page into a directory, select 'New Directory' in the 'File-options' pulldown.
2. You will be prompted to name your new directory. Click 'OK'
3. Select the file you want to make private by clicking in the box to the left of the file name.
4. Click on the 'Move' icon in the Filemanager toolbar. Select the directory you just created. Click 'OK'.
5. Check off the directory you just made, and click on the 'Make Private' icon in the Filemanager toolbar.

Congratulations! You've just made a private directory. Now, you need to assign an access list to your private directory.

6. When you're through making your new directory private, a popup window will appear and ask you to create an access list (or select an access list you've created already). If you haven't yet made an access list, now's the time to do it! Click 'Create a New List.'
7. Enter a name for this access list. Select Create List
8. The new list you just created should be the first in the pulldown. Click 'OK.'
9. You now have an access lost assigned to this directory.

To Create the access list and assign users to it?

10. Click on 'Community Tools' (it's the first item listed in your directory).
11. Click on 'access lists.'
12. After the Filemanager reloads, your entire listing if access lists will appear in the lower frame. Check off the access list you want to edit.
13. Go to the 'Edit - option' pulldown menu and select 'Edit Access Lists.'
14. Edit away! Add member names galore! When you're done, click 'Close.'

Why is my site gone?

Generally, sites get removed for a few reasons:

1) You weren't actively keeping up with your site. If your site falls into our "inactive" stage (meaning you haven't worked on it for a while, and no one's visiting it), we'll remove it to make room for new members.

2) You may have violated one of our Terms of Service. If so, you'll be notified when you login.

3) You may have deleted your site, and forgotten about it.
