How do I transfer a domain to Lycos?

Unfortunately, we do not currently accept domain name transfers (although this is something we are currently working towards implementing). You will have to use Domain Forwarding.

Domain Forwarding automatically forwards domain traffic to another website. By also enabling Domain Masking, your domain name will appear in the browser's location/address bar instead of the destination site address.

If you have a domain name (www.domainname.com) and a published web site (http://membername.webonsites.com, http://membername.tripod.com, or http://www.angelfire.com/directory/name) and you want to "connect" the domain name to the web site, you must use Domain Forwarding.

You will need to contact the company where you registered the domain  and configure it from there.

How do I transfer my domain name to another registrar?

We'd rather not see you go, but if you'd like to transfer your domain name from Lycos Domains to another registrar, you'll have to contact the other registrar to begin the transfer process. We are unable to initiate this process for you.

You should be aware that each registrar has a unique process and timetable for transferring Web addresses. In most cases, you will be required to confirm your transfer request before it is processed.

What is "Host Your Own DNS"?

Host Own DNS - Warning: ONLY for members who plan to host their own website and DNS server. It is NOT for members who are using an ISP or hosting service like Tripod. You will be required to have at least two name servers that will recognize your domain. If you choose this option, you'll be asked for the IP addresses of the two servers (primary and secondary). You'll also have an opportunity to designate two additional ("optional") servers.

What is DNS?

DNS (Domain Name Server) is a general-purpose distributed, replicated, data query service chiefly used on Internet for translating hostnames into Internet addresses.

Namely, it tells the internet where your website's located in relation to your domain name.

So when someone types in your domain name, the DNS tells the internet where your website actually is hosted.

What is IP pointing?

IP Pointing allows you to forward your domain traffic to a specific IP address. A server is required at the designated address to use this forwarding method.

For advanced users we also support dynamic DNS (DDNS) updates to this IP address. Lycos support the protocol establised by DynDNS.org. (the only features we don't support are wildcard, mx, and backmx, all other features are implemented). The URL for updates is

    /service/dyndns_update?
instead of
  • http://username:password@members.dyndns.org
    /nic/update?
which is used by DynDNS.org.

What is propagation?

Propagation is the time it takes all DNS servers and Internet Service Providers to update their DNS tables to reflect any new website locations. The rate at which this happens can vary among providers. New domain name registrations are usually live on the main root servers within 24 hours of registration completion. You may need to allow additional time for this information to trickle down to all the DNS Servers on the Internet. Transfers will take approximately 72 hours to be live in the root servers.

During propagation, your website may be viewable from one ISP, and not another. We suggest you wait 72 hours before announcing your new domain name to the world.
