   Domains Email

Can I get my mail online?

Yes. Lycos Domains, Angelfire, and Tripod all have webmail available:

Domains: http://webmail.domains.lycos.com/www/
Tripod: http://webmail.domains.lycos.com/tripod/
Angelfire: http://webmail.domains.lycos.com/angelfire

Please note: WebMail is only availble for POP3 email accounts. If you are using E-mail forwarding, you will not be able to login to the WebMail client. Email forwarding only forwards your email to the destination address. We do not retain a copy on our server(s).

What is my username and password?

Your username and password for your e-mail is completely independant of your Lycos Domains/Tripod/Angelfire login.

You will create your email address, from your Account.

Your login name will be your entire email address. (ie; me@mysite.com.) You would need to use this entire email address, and not just "me", to login.

Your password will also be created at that time, and will/should be different from your account login password.

Your Domain Name Email information is available to you from the My Account portion of your Tripod membership.

Please log into your account at tripod.lycos.com.

Clicking on the Domain Info provides you with your Domain Name Management information.

Clicking on Domain Name Email provides you with your Domain Name Email information.

What does POP/IMAP mean?

POP and IMAP are protocols for how email is transmitted over a network.

POP stands for Post Office Protocol, and IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol.

They are very similar, but do have some important differences.

How are POP and IMAP different?

POP (Post Office Protocol) is suitable if you are going to use email only from one location, such as your home or office. All your email activities are performed on your local workstation.

Mail is "popped"(downloaded) from the inbox of the email server to your local machine, either manually or according to a preset time interval. The email is stored on your local computer where you can create folders that may or may not match the folders you might have on the email server.

Since the email is normally deleted from the server when it is downloaded, you are responsible for making backup copies. Also, your downloaded email will not be on the server if you attempt to access it from a different computer.

Although you can choose a POP setting to "leave mail on the server", you cannot use folders, filters, or any other client capabilities on the server, and leaving email on the server can result in your exceeding your allowable disk space. (4MB)

IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) is better if you need to access your mail from work and from home, or while traveling. Your email and folders can reside on the mail server so they are accessible regardless of which computer you are using.

You still have the option to save messages to local folders (on your machine). Disk space is limited on the server, but you can easily delete selected messages from the server. Of course, you can always download or print any messages you wish.

What is email forwarding?

Email Forwarding directs all email sent to a domain email address to another email address. For example, if your domain name is mydomain.com, you could set up sally@mydomain.com and have that email forward to sally123@lycosmail.com, or wherever you have email service.

If you want a catchall email address for your domain, enter a * or default in the email address field. By doing so, all incoming email that does not match the addresses you've established for your domain will be accessible from your catchall account.

Please Note: If you add email forwards to a domain which already has one or more POP/IMAP email accounts, this change can take up to a few hours to take effect.

Email Forwarding versus POP/IMAP - which would better suit my needs?

When you boil everything down within this debate, it all comes down to what is your personal preference.

We here at Lycos Customer Service do have some quantitative analysis on which service has fewer issues though.  If you are concerned about dropped emails, then you may wish to explore creating your Domain Name as a POP/IMAP over Email Forwarding.

Email Forwarding can be subject to problems with the ISP where the email is being forwarded to.  For example, if you create a catch-all email account for all of your Domain Name emails, this email address may be receiving a lot of SPAM.  As a result, this unwanted traffic could affect your legit traffic because your ISP is going to take steps to reduce the SPAM traffic.

With our new Domain Name Email Platform – Zimbra – there is actually an option to have notices sent to your main email account whenever an email comes into your inbox, so setting up an Email Forwarding account is actually something that technology has moved past.

(login to your webmail Zimbra account -> click on the link for Preferences -> click the Mail tab -> within the Receiving Messages section, enter your main email account within the field labeled “When a message arrives:    Forward a copy to:”)

With this option enabled on your POP/IMAP email account, you can worry less about dropped emails since they would be stored within your account and not loss somewhere on the digitized pathways.  Just some food for thought, hopefully it can help you make a good choice when setting up your initial Domain Name Email account with Lycos.

How do I set up email forwarding?

E-mail Forwarding directs all e-mail sent to a domain e-mail address to another e-mail address. For example, if your domain name is mydomain.com, you could set up you@mydomain.com and have that e-mail forward to hello123@lycos.com, or wherever you have e-mail service.
If you want a catchall e-mail address for your domain, enter a * or default in the e-mail address field. By doing so, all incoming e-mail that does not match the addresses you've established for your domain will be accessible from your catchall account.

To setup or modify email forwarding:

1) Navigate to: http://www.tripod.lycos.com
2) Login via the LOG IN button at the top of the page.
3) Click "My Account"
4) Click the Domain E-Mail link from the left hand menu.
-The E-Mail Management page should appear displaying your E-Mail settings.
