A public service announcement possibly concerning your debit cards

A public service announcement: Please be sure to check your debit cards

Lycos has received reports that bank-issued VISA debit card numbers may have been compromised at a currently unknown merchant, prompting banks to close those debit card accounts.

This situation has nothing to do with Tripod, Angelfire, Lycos Domains, Lycos Mail, HTML Gear, or Lycos!

We are simply suggesting that you please do the following as good practice to protect yourself:

(1) Check your bank statements periodically for potential fraudulent activity;

(2) Check to make sure your Lycos account has not been closed unexpectedly; and

(3) If the Visa debit card you are using to pay for Tripod, Angelfire, HTML Gear, Lycos Domains, or Lycos Mail service has been unexpectedly closed, update your billing information with a new card number so that you do not lose your premium service.

Thank you for your attention,

The Friendly Folks at Lycos Customer Services.

Lycos Domains Alert - questionable expiration or renewal notices

Lycos Domains Alert:

Some of our members have reported that they are receiving questionable expiration or renewal notices in the mail or by email concerning their Domain Names.

Please be advised that these notices are not from Lycos Domains, Angelfire or Tripod!

Often these come with official looking letters with lots of fine print or look like they come from government or Internet agencies. These notices are from unscrupulous marketers attempting to trick you to transfer your domain registration.

Recently we have even seen examples where these notices try to trick the receiver with "sound-alike" Domain Names.  For example, if you own mydomain.com, the notice may be about mydomain.net or something like mydomaiin.com. Sample Email - please click to view a sample of this abuse email.

This is called Domain Slamming. You can find further information concerning this deceitful practice by searching on the term Domain Slamming or reviewing the following links.

    Patent Registry Scams

    Warning: Beware Unsolicited Trademark Services

    Scams in intellectual property

Please note that Lycos Domains, Angelfire and Tripod does not send out solicitations or renewal notices via regular mail. You'll only hear from us via email.

Here's how the scam works:

  1. You get a letter from an official sounding Domain Registry company telling you that your domain name needs to be renewed because it expires on a certain date.
  2. If you answer the letter and send in a payment, what is actually happening is that you are transferring your domain from Lycos Domains, Angelfire or Tripod to a different company, entirely, and you will no longer receive the Lycos services you have come to expect such as Domain Forwarding, Angelfire/Tripod Assignment, Email Forwarding, POP Emails that are associated with your domain names.
  3. Even if your Web hosting account is at Angelfire or Tripod, if you answer these letters, another company will be responsible for your domain name.
  4. In some cases, you will be prevented from transferring your domain name back to Lycos for a period of time (usually 30 - 60 days)

What you should do:

  1. Do not respond to these offers to renew your domain!
  2. Contact Lycos Customer Service (Ask a Question | Open a Membership Support Ticket) if you need further information about how your Domain Name is renewed. Domain Names provided to you by an Angelfire or Tripod Subscription are renewed automatically for you as long as you keep your billing on your account current. If you have purchased the Domain Name from Lycos as a Stand Alone product, then your default setting on your account is to have the Domain Name auto-renew.

Please notice that Lycos Domains is your current registrar that handles your domain names and if you have and questions regarding the renewal of your domains, please contact Customer Service by clicking on the Ask a Question | Open a Membership Support Ticket link
