How do I submit my site to Lycos Search to be indexed?

For now, Lycos is not offering a submission service.

As a result of some recent enhancements to AskJeeves, our search partner, we're confident that we're indexing even more Web pages than ever. Given that your site is search engine friendly, your site should appear in Lycos Search as a result of our ongoing "crawling" of the Web for new and updated sites and content.

If you are the owner/webmaster of the site in question, you may also want to research some online resources that provide tips and helpful information on how to best create a search engine friendly website.

I have a new website, how do I update my listing?

Our web crawler, which seeks out pages on the Web to index for search, will systematically pick up changes made to websites. However, we're not able to provide a specific time frame as to when a given page will be reindexed.

When Lycos revisits the domain and sees that the information for your old webpage is no longer up, it will remove the information from the database and the old listing will be removed. We do not manually remove URLs for the security of the URLs already in the database.

How can I stop Lycos from indexing my site?

If you want to remove an active page from the Lycos catalog, you must make use of the robots.txt standard.

What is robots.txt?
This small text file is like a traffic cop that tells our software which parts of your site can be examined and indexed. Ask your Web hosting company if your site already employs this file. If not, it is a fairly simple matter to create your own robots.txt file.

The robots.txt file is intended to indicate to robots (aka: spiders, wanderers) which portions of a server should not be accessed. If utilized, it should reside in the root of your server's directory. Oftentimes they are used to disallow access to personal directories, temporary information, or cgi-scripts -- anywhere the system administrator would prefer spiders not travel.

When our spider requests the 'robots.txt', it is parsing out the agent-id strings from the file and trying to make a match against itself. If it can do so, it knows that the contents of the robots.txt file apply to it.

There are generic configurations that apply to all robots, as well as very specific configurations for both agent and directory exclusion. It is a good idea for you to implement a robots.txt file if there are parts of your web site that you would prefer not to be included in the Lycos search catalog. The file itself is fairly easy to write. Here is a resource that provides specifications and might help you out more:

When Lycos revisits the domain and sees that the information for the site has a robots.txt file in place, it will remove the information from the database and the listing will be removed. We do not manually remove URLs for the security of the URLs already in the database.
